Working Project Description

St()rm is a multidisciplinary and collective artistic enquiry created by multidisciplinary artist “Children of compost”, that uses the idea of the storm as a starting point for exploring processes of change, transformation and reorganisation.

Although the project was initially inspired by the climatic instability caused by human activity, St()rm expands the idea of the storm into a philosophical exploration of the wider transformations we are living through: climatic, ecological, economic, social and technological.

Many of the structures we have taken for granted appear to be changing simultaneously, at speeds and scales that are difficult to comprehend. This can generate fear and uncertainty around a future whose shape we cannot yet imagine.

St()rm attempts to give form to these ongoing transformations that we can sense, but cannot yet fully name. Looking at them from different perspectives and creating a series of images, sounds, words and other forms that may help us develop a different way of relating to what is changing.

A storm can destroy, regenerate, displace, adapt, transform or create new forms of organisation.
From this emerges a question that acts as a seed for the project:

What happens when we stop imagining the storm only as something we need to overcome,
and begin asking how we might live within it?

St00rm will carry this question into physical and digital encounters with artists, scientists, activists, thinkers, communities and people from different cultural contexts and disciplines.

The process reconnects with something from my documentary practice. Conversation and curiosity become the starting point, although the camera is no longer necessarily the instrument of documentation. In each encounter, the collaborator and I will explore the question together and find a way of responding to it. This response might become a sound piece, a series of images or moving images, a poem, a performance, or another form of creative exploration that can be documented audiovisually.

Each collaboration will generate its own small storm, with its own language and perspective.

The question itself will not remain unchanged. Each encounter may modify it or generate a new question from what emerges through the collaboration. That question will then travel into the next encounter, allowing the enquiry to shift as it moves from one person to another.

The international and multidisciplinary dimensions are integral to this process. A storm does not mean the same thing to everyone. St()rm is interested in what happens when different forms of knowledge, experience and imagination enter into relationship around a shared enquiry, without needing to arrive at a common definition.

The small storms generated through each collaboration will gradually enter an evolving digital collection. Sounds, images, words, conversations, movements and other documented forms will be able to coexist, overlap, interfere and establish unexpected relationships with one another.

This digital holding will act as a living memory of the encounters and as artistic material capable of ongoing transformation. It will become the basis for generative installations, performances and audiovisual environments presented in different cultural and social spaces. As new collaborations enter the project, the composition and relationships between the existing materials will change.

From this accumulation, a larger St()rm will gradually emerge: a collective work whose form is never finished.

The methodology begins to behave like the phenomenon it is trying to observe. Each encounter introduces a new force into the system, affecting what is already there and altering the possibilities of what might happen next.
